Melbourne's Golden Summer of Live Music and Grand Slams at Federation Square

Pull up one of the striped deckchairs and settle in for a summer of live music, salsa classes, wine tasting and nail-biting tennis matches at Federation Square.

The festivities kick off in December with Fed Square's off-beat Christmas celebration, Spirit of the Square. Away from the bustle of the department stores, this free program draws together much-loved traditions with contemporary, often cheeky surprises including stencil art and a giant penguin! The Christmas tree is still there, but given new life with the opportunity for visitors to change the lighting each night and see their Christmas wishes on the Big Screen.

Kids of all ages (and nostalgic mums and dads) will also be drawn to ACMI's extraordinary exhibition, Dreams Come True: The Art of Disney's Classic Fairy Tales. This Australian exclusive explores the artistry behind Disney's timeless animated films with original concept art, story sketches, drawings, maquettes and workshops.

During the long balmy nights that Melbourne is famous for, music will take centre stage with Fed Square Live Presented by The Push - a free series of outdoor concerts held every second Thursday until 21 April. The eclectic program has something to tantalise all musical tastes, with indie, blues and roots, world music, dance and rock performances by top independent acts and emerging Australian talent on the bill. Grab a spot in front of the stage and soak up the atmosphere or make the most of Fed Square's alfresco dining areas and enjoy the show with the addition of cocktails and tapas.

In the biggest concert of all, New Year's Eve will bring thousands of revellers into Fed Square to see in 2011 with spectacular fireworks and a free program of cool beats, reggae and funk from local acts, Tumbarumba and the Hit Parade. Not the dancing type? Learn to shimmy and shake it with the best of them with free salsa classes from The Salsa Foundation, held every Wednesday and Thursday night in The Amphitheatre from November to March.

Then there's the Australian Tennis Open, synonymous with summer holidays, barbeques and good times. During those two weeks in January Fed Square will again be transformed into a sea of deckchairs and painted faces as the city converges in front of the Big Screen for a free live broadcast of all the action.

Australia Day on 26 January provides a break from centre court, with Melbourne's free multicultural concert, Australia Day Voyages taking over the stage at Fed Square.

And should all of that activity leave you feeling parched, there's no better place to rehydrate then the monthly Fed Square Wine Showcase, where you can taste your way through Victoria's many wine regions and rub shoulders with the winemakers.

A Local Partnership has Created Employment Opportunities for 5 local Mums

For many local mums returning to the workforce after spending time raising their family can be daunting. Some have limited skills and a lack of recent work experience and many are just unsure how the will juggle their family commitments with work.

A local partnership between PVS Workfind (previously IPA) and Metro Apartments on Bank Place - Melbourne, is helping mums to balance their responsibilities, learn new skills, work with an understanding employer and together they have secured employment for five local mums.

“Some of the unemployed mums I meet have not been in paid employment for over 10 years, so it’s understandable that they need some extra support and encouragement to find their way back into work.” Said Ben Giacomantonio, Employment Coach at PVS Workfind.

Juliette is a young single mother who was struggling to return to work but with the support of PVS Workfind Juliette is now working at Metro Apartments.

With support from PVS Workfind consultant, Mal Noori, Juliette went to a Parenting workshop which helped her to overcome some of her barriers to returning to work and realize she was not alone. Together, as Juliette began to look for work they also set realistic goals, stepping stones to help her to re-enter the workforce.

The PVS Workfind team gave Juliette support and guidance, which kept her motivated toward success and when she was ready to return to work Ben contacted Mr Harsha Karanarutna, Property Manager of Metro Apartments Bank Place on her behalf to set up an interview.

The hotel were looking for a part time room attendant who was keen, had the ability to be trained to become a weekend supervisor and asked Ben to set up an interview with Juliette. The next day Ben supported Juliette in her interview and she was offered a position to start within a few days.

Juliette successfully commenced employment one month ago and with continued Post Placement Support from Ben Giacomantonio to both herself and the employer she is rapidly becoming a valued member of the Metro Apartment team.

“When I first met Harsha from Metro apartments here in Melbourne, we discussed the difficulties local mums were facing when returning to work, not long after we were meeting again to discuss potential candidates and government incentives to create opportunities, and now we have five mums working there” Said Ben.

Donna Kelly finds a home away from home in the heart of the big smoke

A night in Melbourne is always good for the soul.

It’s that city fix, a glimpse of the fast life and a chance to catch up with favourite restaurants and haunts.

My husband and I decided to train it down. It’s cost-effective, saves on driving stress, avoids tolls and drops you right in the heart of Melbourne at Southern Cross Station.

We had packed light so we decided to stroll up Collins Street to Bank Place and our accommodation Metro Apartments. These are ideally located between the station and the Bourke Street Mall. It’s also within easy walking distance of places like Southgate and the Crown casino, and offers a home away from home with a one bedroom apartment including fully-equipped kitchen along with microwave and dishwasher and even a washing machine/dryer for extended stays.

Our apartment was absolutely incredibly quiet. While the neighbouring Mitre Tavern was still pumping when we arrived back about 11pm after our night out, all was quiet upstairs in room 906.

After checking out our accommodation, and dumping our bags, we headed out for a Friday afternoon drink and found ourselves seated outside at the restaurant just next door. We enjoyed a beer and watched Melbourne go by before deciding to take in Beneath Hill 60. Again we skipped the tram and wandered to the Hoyts opposite Myer.

It was dark by the time we came out and we decided to tram up Elizabeth and then Collins back to our apartment. The tavern, the oldest pub in Melbourne, was now in full swing, although we couldn’t work out if it was the same crowd from 2pm or just a new shift of well-dressed workers. After a break, and checking out the news of the day, we made our way to Little Bourke Street and our favourite Japanese restaurant, Kunis. We always choose the bar so we can watch the sushi chefs weave their magic, like with our moriawase dish a mixture of sashimi and sushi pieces. My husband always asks for extra wasabi which the chefs find amusing. He says it clears his head.

Dinner over we decided to walk back and enjoy the mild autumn night. There are often reports of violence in the city streets but I always feel safe, perhaps because there are so many others out taking in the prettily-lit street.

After a fantastic sleep we woke early, 8am, and, despite asking for an 11am checkout, we were off again by 10am with the receptionist only too happy to look after our bags until our return. Being Saturday there was no choice but to tram down to the Queen Vic Markets. We strolled a few aisles and. With a few parcels starting to weigh us down, bought a shopping cart. We felt middle-aged but then looked around to see we had been about the only couple without one.

Then it was off to the fresh food market to fill a pre-purchased chiller bag with huge prawns, whiting tails, smoked ham and a tarmasalata dip.

We jumped on a tram to Collins St, another to Bank Place and then strolled down to Southern Cross Station in time for the 3.15pm train.

And while it’s nice to spend time in the big smoke, it’s also lovely to watch the country return as the train wends its way back home.
